Touted as an anti-ageing drink by Hollywood celebrities, and even termed as a health drink / superfood, Kombucha has started making its waves in the local market. If you are interested to find out what is the hype about Kombucha, or what is Kombucha really about, then read on!
Kombucha is a fermented probiotic beverage that has a rich anecdotal history of health benefits. While these benefits are not scientifically proven, people around the world have claimed that they have experienced health benefits from anti-ageing to Kombucha being a miracle cancer cure. With titles such as “elixir of youth” and “drink of immortality” given to this drink, it is no wonder that so many people are captivated by Kombucha.
Kombucha is essentially made with a SCOBY (a Symbiotic Colony Of Bacteria and Yeast), tea, sugar and a starter liquid from a previous batch of Kombucha. The process is similar to beer fermentation, where the resulting drink is a lightly effervescent, slightly tart beverage that reminds one of an apple cider vinegar drink.
While Kombucha can be drank on its own (it’s best consumed chilled), it can also be mixed with juices to counter the “vinegary” taste that some people dislike. The Kombucha can also be flavoured with fruits and herbs such as pineapple, ginger, lemongrass, lavender and osmanthus.
